Despite COVID 19, 2020 has been an interesting and exciting year for the Lund family. Both Ulla & I reached the old age of 84 with flying flags- still difficult to grasp.
The year began with me having to adjust to my new pace maker from the USA. For many years as a surgeon, I myself have put pace makers into my patients, but it is something completely different to get one myself, and not least to get my family not to consider me disabled, and every time I lifted a cup sat they looked at me to see if I could handle it (joke).
The pacemaker is fantastic, so all people should have it as a birthday present when they turn 70. I have just been to a year of control, and it works 100%, but it has ONLY 9.4 years left of power (joke), so when I turn 93, it must have a new battery – says the surgeon ;;;. I’m in good shape, I walk 6 km a day, and Ulla stays in good shape with a lot of gymnastics. We enjoy life and each other, and just take one day at a time, the future is not so long anymore. Ulla has taken up old recipes again, so we eat food as our mother made it, she also has new dishes from all over the world, and I enjoy being a guest in a 5 * restaurant.
We, like everyone else, have had to conform to the COVID 19 restrictions, but probably have more experience of epidemics than most other people. Over the years, we have been through 3 cholera epidemics and 1 typhus epidemic, where I was the doctor who treated the patients. In Kenya – December 1973 – one patient died between the hands of Ulla & I, after which we sent a very poor Pt, with the laboratory answer and the diagnosis (cholera) to Nairobi. At the same time ordered 10,000 doses of vaccine down by plane to the farm. I received an angry letter from the Ministry of Health stating that I could not diagnose Cholera, but as I was clearly hysterical, they sent 5000 doses of vaccine down to us. Ten days later the government admitted that there was cholera in the country, and over the next few days we vaccinated 15,000 of our people.
Despite restrictions, we have seen our grandchildren once a week, with the excuse that they had pain in the ears, and they needed to be seen by a doctor, so they came with cotton wool in the ears, in cash they were to be stopped on the way. Kristien adhered strictly to the rules, so we did not see him for a couple of months, but when they lifted the lock down, he came to visit us again. He had grown so much at that time that I barely recognized him. He goes to Windsor Boy school, where his hobby is rowing, which he goes all the way up to, so much so that he meets for training three times a week at 06.45 before school starts, plus rowing every Saturday. Their trainer is a former Olympics gold medal winner, so it’s really serious training. He is now also doing well in school and really enjoy it there. Mikkel & Helena go to another school, and both do well despite teaching at home most of the year. Helena is our little mathematician and football girl, while Mikkel is developing into a little philosopher with sharp and interesting ideas. In August we all went to a German circus show at the Ascot race course- the only thing we had attended apart from the weekly supermarket visit.- It was a good experience, but from my point of view it lacked the smell of horses and sawdust.
Unfortunately we have not been able to travel this year, but let’s all hope we can meet again in 2021. We are fortunately enjoying the lovely place we live in the middle of a large forest, small lakes and a lot of wildlife, so good opportunities for long walks . Ulla has her little garden, which she always enjoys working in, and we have lots of birds in our “restaurant”, which we enjoy watching. We certainly do not lack anything as we have 6 supermarkets, doctors, dentists, physiotherapist and pharmacies within 6 minutes drive, so we live really centrally.
Claus and his family are fine, and the company he works for has paid 80% of his salary_Furlough- during the 6 months lock down, where he has then been able to stay home and help the children with their school work, as well as build new computers and not least help us two old people with our computer problems. In November he started on Amazon movies again full time in the office, but they are tested for Corona 2 times a week, sitting all alone in a large room, so he is pretty safe. Working only 5 minutes drive from home, a huge advantage over the long road to London, so now he saves at least 3 hours a day. Stephanie keeps the whole family together, and does a great job, and in addition she makes beautiful post / Christmas cards as you can see.
Friendship is the oil that lubricates the engine of life.
Red wine helps too.
Finally, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and let’s hope we can all be together with our family over Christmas. Here we will be allowed to be together from 23-12 to 27-12, so we can enjoy John’s pancake Little Christmas Eve here and Christmas Eve with the family in Windsor.
Happy New Year and let’s hope 2021 will be a better year for all of us.
Best wishes and we hope you all are well and hopefully we can see each other in 2021.
